Can anyone help in something similar to this I have an Imac with a superdrive. But it's very fussy and won't read my previously burned DVDR's. I'm talking about stuff burned with my old Sony DVDR recorder, stuff grabbed off Freeview and old VHS tapes. But time has moved on, and I want to play them as video files from my Raspberry Pi as opposed to DVD discs I was considering either: Getting an external Blu-Ray drive off eBay (approx £20) but as it's a slimline model, I'm worried it will be equally as fussy Getting a full size USB DVD rewriter from Cash Converters (I am currently using my Dad's full size rewriter in his Windows Desktop PC) But I am worried that it's OSX being fussy rather than the drive, can other forumites offer their opinion.

Whether you're at the office or on the road, you can play and burn both CDs and DVDs with the Apple USB SuperDrive. It works well when you want to watch a DVD movie, install software, create backup discs, and more. Only slightly bigger than a CD case, the Apple USB SuperDrive slips easily into your travel bag when you hit the road and takes up little space on your desk or tray table when you're working.
You don't have to worry about lost cables with the Apple USB SuperDrive. It connects to your MacBook Pro with Retina display, MacBook Air, iMac (late 2012 and later), Mac mini (late 2009 and later), or Mac Pro (late 2013) with a single USB cable that's built into the SuperDrive. There's no separate power adapter, and it works whether your Mac is plugged in or running on battery power. Rated 5 out of 5 by Joe K. From Apple USB SuperDrive I decided to make this purchase at the same time as the purchase of an iMac.
The new iMacs don't have a CD/DVD drive included. The SuperDrive is small and takes up minimal space and it's quiet too. I find the minimalist styling sleek and unobtrusive. I recorded several CD's and a few DVD's and found no issues whatsoever. Same with playback. I really didn't expect any issues from a new unit but I know from experience that isn't always the case.
That said, I'm quite pleased with this purchase. Only time will be the final arbiter of longevity. Like the caveat states: 'Mileage may vary'. Rated 4 out of 5 by Mark from Very nice drive I needed an external drive to show some prepared class videos. It is fast, and effective. It is a bit heavy, but this is probably due to the case (which matches the Mac book silver).
There are cheaper options, but I needed the reliability. I hope it lives up to my hopes.
Downside: there is no manual eject button on the device (you know, the paperclip hole). However, there is an overide in the Mac desktop.
Open the finder window in the lower task bar (bottom, not the top of the screen). Click on the disk image and eject it. Rated 5 out of 5 by David from It just works. I purchased this optical drive to use with a new iMac 5K 27-inch Retina (2017) machine. While there were less expensive third party USB optical drives available for the Mac, I elected to purchase the Apple product to eliminate any possible compatibility issues. The Apple SuperDrive works very quietly with no surprises. There is no clunky tray to load.
Simply partially insert a CD or DVD into the slot on the SuperDrive and the drive pulls it the rest of the way into the unit. When you eject the device from the Mac desktop, the SuperDrive gently pushes the CD or DVD out so it can then be easily removed. A dust seal keeps dust from entering the media insertion slot of the drive. Please note that the attached USB cable on the SuperDrive is short: only about a foot long. This is not an issue when using it with the iMac, but your situation may be different. Rated 5 out of 5 by Artful Dodger from Apple's USB Super Drive Recently purchased a new iMac. My wife and I needed to burn a CD of some music for a party we were attending.
Since the iMac did not have a CD/DVD burner or drive, we were at a loss as to what to do to capture several songs for the party. For a modest price we were pleased with the USB Super Drive both for the current transfer of music and as an extra drive for any future iMacs or MacBook Pro's we might purchase in future years. Worked fine and are satisfied with our purchase. Rated 3 out of 5 by cindy o. From Three's the charm?
Since the latest versions of the MacBook don't have a cd drive, this is a necessary addition. Since I bought my Mac Book Pro last May, this is the third one that I have purchased. Two knocked pout.
And a major complaint it that when the external drive is plugged (via USB port) into my MacBook, there is no indication of it in the finder? Only (sometimes) when you actually insert a disc into the drive is t=it indicated. It is inconsistent.sometimes it works, sometimes not. But, since there is no alternative.whaddya gonna do?
Rated 4 out of 5 by kim W. From Just what I needed I ordered a new Macbook Pro and didn't realize that it didn't contain a cd/dvd drive (silly me), so I had to order this for my photography business. The item is just what I needed, I still hate that a cd/dvd drive wasn't included on my Mac (made me pretty upset after the amount of money you pay) but this solved the problem. B&H did accidentally send me two drives, I called immediately to let them know and to return the extra one and I was treated rudely about it. I could have kept the extra one but I tried to do the right thing and almost regretted it. Disappointed in that part of the deal since I have always used B&H for all my needs, am reconsidering it now - But this product is great if you need the drive.
